Getting angry at God

It can happen. It’s not ideal, but it can be an important part of your personal faith. It might not even be an anger at God per say, but an angry venting about a situation in life that you’re frustrated with. But you are venting it with God.

We are taught to approach God with awe and respect. Sometimes we can be caught in the “O heavenly fathers” or what have you that we find it difficult to open ourselves up to God because our emotions are put through this reverential filter. Some people can get their feelings out and express themselves this way to their satisfaction.

If so, more power to them.

But if that doesn’t quite work for you don’t be afraid to let that emotion out without filter, like you would in the real world. It’s a totally honest response to your feelings, and more than anyone else, God can take it. God loves that contact, and if that’s what’s in your heart, there is joy in God for you being free enough to share that. That’s how love fosters and grows.

It’s okay to be the angry child if that’s what you are.

It also gives the parent a chance to really speak to those emotions honestly, because you’ve been honest enough to put them out there like that.

You may find in those moments, when you let loose with the full fury of your emotion, the quiet words of peace that God so often has when you run wildly towards his embrace. That cry for attention, even when that cry states a desire to walk away from that embrace, often steels your faith because no one gets that angry or emotional at something that’s not real. Getting angry reaffirms that reality, which opens the door for God to reaffirm the reality that is God’s love.

Sometimes that lets God’s gentle words of love shine through back at you more than any of the church and Bible taught platitudes ever could. Because they are all of and purely you, aimed purely and solely at God.

Be free with your words and expressions to God if you wish. Talk to God like a friend if that’s what works. As your faith is so be it unto you. God knows where your love lies for him, and can see it in your heart. It doesn’t need to be manufactured in your words when you seek counsel and peace.
